As the group confronts the Verge that has opened in the padded cell of the hospital wing, Guzman shifts into urshul and charges into the room. His packmate Jim follows, shifting into dalu form. Missus Miller and Lake Charles remain outside, checking for any staff or security in case of trouble. The shaman Smith enters the room last and enters into the spirit world to see a huge, demonic, plauge ridden rat the size of 5 men.

A furious battle ensues inside the Verge as Guzman confront the demon beshilu (with the aid of John Smith). After a long ordeal Guzman manages to pin down the huge beshilu using one of his battle gifts, however, in the course of the heat of combat Guzman enters kuruth (death rage), dispatching not only the massive beast, but hundreds of smaller beshilu hosts. Jim steps back into the physical world taking with him the shaman Smith in order to safe guard themselves against the beserk fury of the pack Alpha.

After a few minutes Guzman manages to regain composure and shifts back to hishu form, stepping back into the physical padded cell of Room 202. Once all are back they hear the screams of a woman. They all follow the sound to the north end of the West Wing only to find the dismemebered bodies of 5 patients killed by 3 beshilu possessed orderlies, two who are wielding bloodied axes. The group confronts them, after which another heated melee ensues, resulting in Smith being severely wounded and the group killing the beshilu-possessed humans. After a few minutes, they begin to smell acrid smoke comming from the floors above decide to make an escape. Fleeing to the south end of the building they begin to hear the screams of trapped patients. Smith along with Guzman (in urshul form) and Jim (in dalu form) proceed to go up the emergency stairwell only to find one survivor (and the bodies of other patients who've been hacked to pieces by the beshilu-possessed humans). They manage to save a female patient who's been mortally wounded while Smith using Life magics heals her.

They proceed to evacuate the burning wing as security and other asylum staff begin to approach from the East Wing. The group manages to evade questioning and follow Miller to the security station where her Fate magics tell her lies the source of trouble.
